Parliament: 38 Session: 1
RECREATIONAL VESSELS — ACCIDENTS AND THIRD PARTY INSURANCE
952. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
(1) How many recreational vessels are currently registered in Western Australia?
(2) How many recreational skippers’ tickets have been issued since these became compulsory in April 2008?
(3) How many recreational boating accidents resulting in personal injury or death have occurred in 2008–09, 2009–10 and 2010–11?
(4) Why does the minister not support compulsory third party insurance for registered skippers?
Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.
(1) 94 435.
(2) 160 293.
(3) The respective figures are 120, 89 and 87.
(4) The cost of developing and administering a compulsory third party insurance scheme would far outweigh any benefit to the whole community.
