Question Without Notice No. 885 asked in the Legislative Council on 15 September 2009 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Parliament: 38 Session: 1

HARBOUR THEATRE — PRINCESS MAY BUILDING, FREMANTLE

885. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Local Government:

The City of Fremantle leases the Princess May Building to the Fremantle Education Centre. For the past 12 years the Fremantle Education Centre has subleased a portion of those premises to the Harbour Theatre, Fremantle’s only community theatre.

(1) Is the minister aware that the Harbour Theatre in Fremantle is facing imminent eviction from the Princess May Building leased to the Fremantle Education Centre by the City of Fremantle?

(2) Is the minister aware that the following local government authorities provide subsidised premises to their community theatres: the City of Armadale, the Town of Kalamunda, the City of Melville, the Shire of Mundaring, the City of Nedlands, the City of South Perth, the City of Swan and the City of Wanneroo?

(3) Does the minister acknowledge that community theatre plays a key role in building positive communities?

Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. In his absence, I provide this answer on behalf of the minister representing the Minister for Local Government. The member will know it is from him, not me, because of the degree of brevity.
