SHARK DRUM
LINE PROGRAM
601. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the
Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the public environmental review document currently
out for public comment regarding three more years of drum lining.
(1) Was any of
the stakeholder consultation referred to in section 3 of the public
environmental review document on the proposed drum lining program from 2014–17
advertised publicly?
(2) If yes to (1), can I please have a full description of
what media and locations it was advertised in?
(3) Why was,
specifically, Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club approached by the government to be
consulted out of the more than 25 local surf lifesaving clubs in the state?
(4) Can the
minister please give the time of day, dates and locations of each occasion when
attempts have been made to catch and/or kill a specific shark deemed a threat,
firstly under the imminent threat policy introduced in 2012, and then later as
rapid response deployments made during the 2014 drum lining trial period?
(5) In
relation to (4), can the minister please state for each occasion whether the
shark was captured and/or killed?
Hon
KEN BASTON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) No; public consultation is part of the current public
environmental review process.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) Consultation
occurred with Mullaloo surf club particularly because of interest shown in
shark hazard mitigation. In addition, consultation occurred with Surf
Lifesaving WA in December 2013, throughout the trial and in May 2014.
(4) Information
regarding rapid response deployments is included on page 13 of ''Review:
Western Australia Shark Hazard Mitigation Drum Line Program 2013–14'',
which can be found on the Department of the Premier and Cabinet website. Under
the imminent threat policy, capture gear has been set three times: Cape Arid,
October 2013; Gracetown, November 2013; and Dunsborough, January 2013.
(5) No sharks were killed in the imminent threat or rapid
response deployments.
